Brady's lucky turkey wishbone
A Red Lion Area School District student in Mrs. King's sixth-grade class at Clearview Elementary School wrote this story about getting a wish when you pull the turkey wishbone. Make a wish, Brady. It was thanksgiving and it was time to pull out the wishbone in the turkey. What should I wish for? That's it, I got it, I wish that I'd play in the NFL as a running back. Then nine years later my wish came true. I was going to play for the Baltimore Ravens as a second string running back. I went through training camp and pre season games. Bad news came up when our starting running back, Willis McGahee, got hurt, but that was good news for me. I was going to have to start as a running back. Then opening day rolled up, this was going to be my NFL debut. I started off with a 5-yard run, and then a 10-yard run and we drove downfield for my first NFL touchdown. I had a good game with 105 yards rushing and a 21-7 win over the Cincinnati Bengals. After my awesome debut my coach, Brian Belick, made me starting running back. The whole season was like that, we were 15-1 and heading to the super bowl. That season I had 1,250 yards rushing and 15 rushing touchdowns. We were playing the Philadelphia Eagles in the super bowl, the fiercest team in the league. Here I was in the super bowl, and I wanted that super bowl ring so bad. I started the game off with a 7-yard play and then got stuffed. Boy, people were right, this eagles defense was fierce, but I wasn't worried because I believed in myself and our fantastic defense. At half time it was 10-7 Eagles but, we were still in it. The game was in our favor when I broke one free for a 49-yard touchdown. Now at the end of the 3rd quarter it was 14-10 us! Then in the 4th quarter the eagles scored a touchdown and it was 17-14 Eagles. We had 5 minutes to score. We got 8 yards and it was 4th and 2 with 4 minutes left on the 50-yard line. We had no choice but to go for it. We handed the ball off to me up the middle and got 4 yards and a 1st down. Then we were driving down field and got to the 3-yard line with 5 seconds left. This was our last play. They handed the ball off to me up the middle, and I pushed with all my might. I was down, the whistle blew, and there was a pile up on the goal line. The referee said I didn't get in the end zone, but we challenged the play. The play was being reviewed and the referee came back. The referee said, " After reviewing the play the ruling on the field is reversed." Yes! We won the super bowl on my rookie year. Hey, I was happy and I had a shiny new ring.
You know, I think back to that Thanksgiving when I was 12. I don't know about you but I think that's a wish come true. My family still doesn't know what I wished for when I pulled out that wishbone.
