Prepare for
weather emergencies
The Junior Dispatch teamed up with the York County Office of Emergency Management to highlight Weather Emergency Preparedness Week, March 12 to 18.
Some of the artwork and articles that were submitted by York County students in observance of the commonwealth-designated week appear on this page and on pages 4, 5 and 8.
For more information about preparing for weather emergencies, call 840-2915.
A Dallastown Area School District student in Jackie Loehwing's fourth-grade class at Ore Valley Elementary School wrote this story after a discussion about types of emergencies and appropriate emergency planning for Weather Emergency Preparedness Week, March 12-18.

Thunder Strikes Again: When thunder strikes, electricity may go out so don't be alarmed because I, Danielle, am going to tell you what to do. When a thunderstorm comes don't use electricity because you may get electrocuted and believe me it hurts. And also in a thunderstorm you can get hurt if you don't be careful. Also don't leave your garage door open because if something is metal in your garage, the lightning could strike it and possibly get broken. Don't use an umbrella in a thunderstorm because you could get hit by lightning. Also, shut all doors and windows for safety. Also, don't talk on the phone.
Another thing to not do in a thunderstorm is don't stay near or stand by a tree in a thunderstorm because the tree branch could fall down from the tree and hit you. You could get hit by lightning because trees collect water and lightning hits water. And trees are high up and lightning hits high up things.
Another good thing to do in a thunderstorm is have a flashlight ready so in case the power goes out you can have a flashlight ready. So when the power goes out with a flashlight you can see. Also, instead of waiting for the power to go on get a flashlight and see. And if you don't have a flashlight you can light candles and candles are almost like a flashlight.
Also in a thunderstorm you want to stay away from pools because you can get hit by lightning. And because pools have water in them and lightning is attracted to water. And the pool could have trees around it and they can get hit also. Don't go in the pool, stay in the house. Also, don't sit by the pool.
